The 2016-17 Gagarin Cup final will be contested by the 2015 champion, SKA Saint Petersburg, and the reigning champion, Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Both teams earned the right to compete for the KHL Championship’s main trophy thanks to a 4-0 series sweep in the Conference final, with the Petersburg team defeating Lokomotiv Yaroslavl to become the best in the West and the men from Magnitogorsk ousting Ak Bars Kazan to claim supremacy in the East.

The format for the Gagarin Cup final series is the traditional best-of-seven contest, with Metallurg (as the higher-placed team in the Conference standings) enjoying home advantage in Game 1, 2, and if necessary, Game 5 and 7. SKA is at home in Game 3, 4, and if necessary, Game 6.
