Former Minnesota Wild forward Chad Rau is the latest player to join HC Red Star Kunlun of Beijing. The 29-year-old American, a gold medalist at the 2005 World Juniors, has agreed a one-year deal with the KHL’s newest member.
A few days earlier, Swedish defenseman Tobias Viklund, 28, officially signed for the Chinese club. The former Avtomobilist man’s deal also runs for 12 months.
Dinamo Minsk has agreed a one-year contract with 25-year-old Belarusian international defenseman Kirill Gotovets, who returns to his home nation following eight years of lower-league action in North America, most recently with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL.
Meanwhile, the sizeable Canadian contingent at Medvescak Zagreb continues to grow: and the latest new recruit is Canadian-American forward Samson Mahbod. The much-traveled 27-year-old has played for various clubs across the North American continent, from Alaska to Prince Edward Island, and spent the 2015-16 season with the Espoo Blues of Finalnd’s Liiga.
The Croatian club also strengthened its Czech legion with the addition of one defenseman - Jakub Krejcik, 25, signed on a one-year contract from Orebro in Sweden - and two forwards: one is 19-year-old Jiri Smejkal, from the Kamloops Blazers of the WHL, also on a one-year deal, and there’s a return on a two-year deal for Tomas Mertl, 30, who had been plying his trade at Hradec Kralove in his homeland after departing Zagreb in January.
